Applying the Elements of Ayurveda

In the past few blogs I have invited you to explore what you already know, to reintroduce yourself to the Elements and their qualities and then witness those very qualities within. This intimate awareness grows with practice so do not become discouraged, trust. In the last blog I used the element of Fire and its qualities and invited you to explore where you felt excessive fire present within your own body. I would like to use that to continue in the explanation of how this can be a guide post to restoring balance within. Ama is the term used for a build up of toxins within the body and in first recognizing them, then approaching with right action we can reduce it’s capacity to manifest to something greater.

If we determined we felt fire or heat from the eyes, there are many beautiful approaches to remedying that. Rose water (pure and of highest quality) is a lovely and natural way to bring soothing relief to irritation in the eyes. When I feel the heat or dryness present, I have a 50% dilution of pure distilled water and pure Rose Water in a mister bottle that I introduce into the eyes to bring cooling to the tissue.

If the gut feels excessively warm, it could mean the PH is out of balance. Moving away from acidic quality foods can initiate the healing in the gut, replacing with more fibrous or alkaline producing foods and spices. There is so much more to explore in each faucet of this medicine, but having the courage to begin allows us to open to wisdom of that which nature provides us, and utilizing it not just for the impact of taste but to enhance our inner physiology. The joints could feel warm to the touch and cooling oils with essentials added can alleviate some of that excessive heat. Also introducing turmeric to your diet can reduce the inflammatory conditions building within the body. Teas are another wonderful way to assist in the process, discovering cooling digestive teas such as ginger tea can alleviate some of the burden your body is experiencing.

If the mind feels hot and the temper feels volatile, often building a fire or candle gazing has the effect of pulling this heat from us. Many traditions use fire as the eradication of anger in ritual. Water is also a calming and cooling way to restore that balance – gazing gently at a large body of water will soften the inner flames. Taking the time for a lengthy and soothing bath, perhaps with cooling essential oils can also allow the heat to lessen within.

These are all concepts and ideas to begin that process of hearing the call and responding. In order to truly hear or feel, we must however become quiet. This can become our daily meditation. I do encourage you if you are in serious discomforts to seek assistance from someone that has the credentials and experience to guide you through dietary and lifestyle changes. These suggestions are merely to open you to the wisdom that is already within you, to encourage you to explore what our ancestors have practiced for 1,000’s of years prior. As we become more aware of our body’s and/or minds needs, we can become our greatest caretakers.
